Alexis Sánchez Serie A Struggles

UDINESE, Italy — Alexis Sánchez is facing challenges after a disappointing season in Serie A. The Chilean forward recently completed what some are calling the worst season of his European career, having joined Udinese in July 2008.

A significant muscle injury delayed Sánchez’s return to action for nearly four months, impacting his preseason. This led to reduced playing time, and he failed to shine as expected following his return to Udinese.

Despite being in condition to play, Sánchez has received limited minutes under German coach Kosta Runjaic. In the last few weeks, he featured in only four matches, accumulating a mere 85 minutes of play due to another injury to his left calf.

Sánchez expressed his frustration on social media, stating, “Míster, conmigo siempre gana. Los campeones son así… Aunque otros no lo vean, tú solo se profesional por el equipo, tus compañeros y por el club.” He emphasized his readiness to help the team.

Runjaic responded to Sánchez’s remarks, acknowledging his points while asserting, “At the end of the day, the decisions are made by the coach.” The back-and-forth prompted comments from Udinese’s sporting director Gianluca Nani, who reaffirmed the need for respect in decisions regarding playing time.

Former Udinese coach Gianni de Biasi defended Sánchez, stating, “If he is fit, he must play. He brings valuable experience to a younger team.” He criticized Runjaic’s decision-making regarding the veteran player, emphasizing the importance of including Sánchez in matches.

Despite his struggles, Sánchez remains respected in Italy. He has faced considerable challenges this season, featuring in only 14 of Udinese’s 40 matches without any goals or assists, totaling just 479 minutes — only 13.3% of the team’s time on the pitch.

National team coach Ricardo Gareca expressed faith in Sánchez, stressing his passion for representing Chile. Gareca noted, “Alexis loves his national team and wants to be involved. He is a key player for us.”

As Sánchez’s contract extends until June next year, discussions about his future in Italian football continue. The upcoming qualifiers for the South American tournament could serve as an essential stage for his resurgence.
