Antoine Griezmann Suffers Head Injury Colliding with Advertising Board in Euro 2024 Opener
Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann endured a bruising evening as France opened up their Euro 2024 campaign against Austria on Monday evening after an unfortunate clash with Max Wober.
The French striker was left bloodied after a collision with advertising hoardings against Austria. Griezmann was named in Les Bleus‘ starting XI for their Group D opener against Austria on Monday and found himself caught in a bruising clash during the second half.
Griezmann attempted to go toe-to-toe with Austria defender Max Wober on the byline. Wober, who was already on a booking after a crunching foul in the first half, shoved Griezmann off the pitch and into the advertising hoardings.
The collision saw Griezmann land head-first into the pitchside advertising, resulting in a nasty gash to the side of his head. France’s medical staff treated him on the pitch before he was taken off for further treatment, with a bandage placed over the injury. However, the bandage fell off, and despite attempts to replace it, Griezmann continued without it.
Despite the setback, Griezmann remained a huge threat for France in their opener against Austria. The 33-year-old, who has 129 French caps to his name, has been a key player for the national team, having won the World Cup in 2018 and scoring 44 goals for his country.
Griezmann currently sits fourth in France’s all-time top scorers list, behind only Thierry Henry and Michel Platini. His Atletico Madrid teammate, Mbappe, played a pivotal role in France taking the lead against Austria in Dusseldorf, with his cross being deflected home by Wober.
Following the clash with Austria, France will face the Netherlands and Poland in their group matches as they aim to progress to the knockout rounds. Austria will also play against these teams in their quest to advance in the tournament.
