SEATTLE (AP) — Houston Astros second baseman Brendan Rodgers suffered a concussion and a broken nose during a minor league rehab assignment, the team announced Saturday. The incident took place Friday night as the 28-year-old player competed for Triple-A Sugar Land in the first game of his rehab assignment.

The collision occurred in the third inning when Rodgers, who has been out since June 15 due to a left oblique strain, collided with teammate Edwin Diaz. Following the injury, the Astros decided to pull Rodgers from his rehab assignment and will conduct further evaluations over the next few days.

This season, Rodgers has struggled at the plate, hitting .191 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 43 games for Houston. He was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 amateur draft by the Colorado Rockies and played for the team from 2019 to 2024. The Astros’ medical staff will determine a new timeline for his return after the evaluations.
