Australia Resumes Funding To Unrwa Amid Israel's Accusations

Australia has announced the reinstatement of funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) following allegations by Israel that some staff members were involved in attacks. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong clarified that the country was not considering UNRWA a terrorist organization, refuting the accusations made by Israel.

The decision includes restoring $6 million to UNRWA and pledging an additional $2.6 million to UNICEF for urgent services in Gaza. Additionally, Australia will deploy a C-17 Globemaster plane to aid in the delivery of humanitarian supplies to the area, aiming to assist the enclave’s struggling population.

In response to similar actions by other countries and the European Union, Australia’s move to resume funding comes after investigations into the allegations against UNRWA staff. The freeze on funds had left the agency facing a financial crisis, with the reinstated support providing crucial aid to the region.

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini expressed gratitude for Australia’s decision, emphasizing the importance of international backing in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He called for other donors to follow suit and help alleviate the widespread hunger and challenges faced by Palestinian refugees.

The Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC) and the Zionist Federation of Australia criticized the Australian government’s choice to resume funding for UNRWA at this time. AIJAC’s Colin Rubenstein expressed disappointment, highlighting concerns about inadvertently supporting Hamas and urging alternative aid channels to be considered.

On the other hand, Foreign Minister Penny Wong defended the decision, citing the need for UNRWA’s infrastructure to facilitate aid distribution in Gaza. She emphasized the importance of ensuring neutrality and integrity within UNRWA operations, while also urging Israel to support transparent collaboration for humanitarian efforts.
