Beloved Wyoming Wildlife Director Scott Talbott Passes at 63

Cheyenne, Wyoming — Scott Talbott, a respected former director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, has passed away at age 63 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Talbott served as the leader of the state’s wildlife management agency from 2011 to 2019, the second-longest tenure in its history.
Talbott was remembered by colleagues as a passionate advocate for wildlife and a mentor to many. Dan Thompson, who oversees large carnivores for the department, noted, “When he became director, he made a point for us to be advocates for wildlife.” Thompson recalled that this direction was appreciated by everyone in the agency.
Janet Milek, who transitioned from an educator to a public affairs role under Talbott’s encouragement, expressed her gratitude for his support. “He recognized skills in people that maybe they didn’t recognize in themselves,” Milek said. “He would say things like, ‘Go do public speaking, because you’re good at it.’”
Colleagues recalled Talbott’s approachable demeanor, which made him a beloved figure within the department. “He was a superior throughout my whole career, but it was never hung over my head,” said Scott Edberg, former deputy chief of wildlife. “Even socially, it never was an impediment.”
After starting his career in 1985 as an elk feeder, Talbott rose through the ranks as a game warden, wildlife investigator, and more. Known for his extensive knowledge of Wyoming’s wildlife, he took a keen interest in conservation issues.
Following his retirement, Talbott held various positions, including a role as a liaison for Safari Club International. He was also involved with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service during the Trump administration.
In recent weeks, Wyoming has lost another devoted wildlife advocate, Steve Kilpatrick, who passed away from pancreatic cancer as well. Kilpatrick worked tirelessly for over 45 years for wildlife conservation in the state.
Services for Talbott are scheduled for May 30 at 2 p.m. at the Albany County Fairgrounds in Laramie. Details regarding Kilpatrick’s services have yet to be released.
