Benjamin Bonzi defeats Hubert Hurkacz in Madrid Open showdown

Madrid, Spain – Hubert Hurkacz returned to competitive tennis after a six-week hiatus on April 25, 2025, but was eliminated in the second round of the ATP Madrid Open by France’s Benjamin Bonzi. The match began at 11 a.m. local time at Caja Magica.
Hurkacz, last seen in action at Indian Wells on March 10, 2025, lost that match 4:6, 0:6 to Alex de Minaur. Bonzi, currently ranked 62nd in the ATP rankings, surprised many with his 6:3, 6:2 victory over former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic in the first round.
In their previous encounters, Hurkacz dominated Bonzi, winning both matches without dropping a set. However, the first set of this match indicated a different story. Bonzi broke Hurkacz’s serve and maintained his lead, ultimately winning the first set 6:4.
The second set was more competitive, but Bonzi managed to break Hurkacz again to claim the match with a final score of 7:5 in the second set. This victory sends Bonzi into the third round against either Taylor Fritz or Christopher O'Connell, as Hurkacz now plans to participate in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome.
