Bernie Kosar Liver Transplant Recovery

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Former NFL quarterback Bernie Kosar shared positive news about his recovery following a liver transplant on Monday.

Calling from University Hospitals on Tuesday morning, Kosar expressed gratitude for the support he received during his medical ordeal. “The doctors are amazed. They can’t believe I’m doing this good,” he said.

Prior to the surgery, Kosar faced serious health challenges, including major bleeding that delayed his transplant. “It was turning into a life-and-death struggle,” Kosar admitted, describing how the bleeding had persisted for days before it finally stopped on Saturday morning.

“But I never believed I’d pass. I just didn’t. I was praying. I felt God’s presence. Lots of people were praying for me… I felt God wasn’t done with me yet,” he said, reflecting on his emotional journey.

Once the bleeding subsided, he underwent the transplant surgery early Monday morning. He expressed deep appreciation for the medical staff, saying, “I can’t thank them enough. Everyone is so great to me.”

Kosar, who is set to turn 62 on November 25, has experienced several health issues, including early Parkinson’s and dementia, yet he remains optimistic about his future. “I know God has more for me to do,” he stated, acknowledging his previous playing career and injuries.

The Browns organization has supported him throughout his health struggles. Kosar mentioned the Haslam family’s assistance with his medical bills: “I would not be alive without them.”

In conclusion, Kosar is determined to use his experience to help others, stating, “This is the first day of the rest of my life.”
