Brazil Announces New Initiatives for Sustainable Maritime Transport
Belém, Brazil — The Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) unveiled new measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime transport sector at COP30, an important climate conference held in Belém.
During the conference, Minister Silvio Costa Filho presented these initiatives as part of the Sustainability Policy launched earlier this year. The goal is to promote decarbonization, establish low-carbon logistics, and stimulate Brazil’s economic development.
The MPor also introduced a public consultation for the Sustainable Vessels Ordinance, which sets environmental criteria for the certification of cabotage vessels. This initiative aims to encourage the use of low-carbon fuels and improve working conditions in the sector, thereby promoting social inclusion and environmental respect.
In addition, Minister Costa Filho participated in the panel titled “Green Corridors and Innovation: Sustainable Connections for the Future,” which included representatives from various governments and international organizations. They discussed strategies for creating sustainable logistics routes that utilize technological innovations and clean fuels.
“Brazil will be a major player in the global energy transition agenda,” stated Minister Costa Filho, emphasizing the country’s commitment to sustainable practices.
The launch of these measures also coincides with the establishment of the Alliance for Sustainable, Resilient, and Integrated Transport in the Amazon, bringing together Amazonian countries and various international financial organizations to enhance regional integration and address historical transport challenges.
This strategic alliance intends to transform the transportation sector into a driver of regional development while ensuring environmental preservation and improving the quality of life for local populations.
