Brighton & Hove Albion’s FA Cup Final Replay Defeat Against Manchester United: A Look Back at the Historic Match
Following Brighton & Hove Albion‘s epic 2-2 extra-time draw with Manchester United, The FA Cup Final replay took place on Thursday 26 May at Wembley with over 91,000 in attendance for the 7.30pm kick-off.
With Chris Ramsey injured after Norman Whiteside’s tackle, there were adjustments for Albion as Steve Gatting moved to the right-back position while Steve Foster returned to accompany Gary Stevens in the centre-back roles.
Despite early dominance from Albion, Manchester United took the lead in the 25th minute through Bryan Robson’s strike after an assist from Alan Davies.
Shortly after, United extended their lead to 2-0 when Whiteside headed in a cross from Davies. Albion’s Jimmy Case attempted a long-range shot but United’s keeper, Gary Bailey, made a crucial save.
Manchester United further solidified their lead with a goal just before half-time from Robson, making it 3-0 going into the break.
In the second half, United added to their tally with a penalty converted by Arnold Muhren after a foul by Stevens on Robson. The match ended 4-0 in favour of Manchester United.
Following the defeat, Albion’s players showed disappointment at the final whistle but received overwhelming support from their fans, with 30,000 Seagulls supporters expressing pride in their team.
The day after the match, a civic reception took place at Hove Town Hall to honour Brighton & Hove Albion for their historic Cup run.
Despite the loss, Gary Stevens was named BBC Man of the Match, which later paved the way for his move to Tottenham Hotspur. The trophy presented to him by Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson is now part of the club’s museum at the Amex Stadium.
Looking back, the FA Cup Final replay remains a memorable moment in Brighton & Hove Albion’s history, showcasing the club’s remarkable achievement.
