Bucs Face Saints Without Reddick: Next Man Up for Defense

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Haason Reddick is expected to miss this Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints due to an ankle and knee injury sustained last week. This absence adds pressure on the Bucs’ defense, as Reddick has been vital, playing 75% of the defensive snaps this season.

Anthony Nelson, a veteran linebacker, will step into Reddick’s position, with opportunities also available for second-round pick Chris Braswell and newcomer Mohamed “Mo” Kamara. They must collectively fill the gap left by the two-time Pro Bowler. “It’s just the state of the union with injuries,” said outside linebackers coach Larry Foote, emphasizing the ‘next man up’ mentality.

Head coach Todd Bowles acknowledged the shift in responsibilities, particularly highlighting that Nelson’s role will expand significantly. Nelson expressed his commitment to the team, saying, “Every opportunity is so precious,” and acknowledging how injuries have been part of the Bucs’ journey this season.

Braswell’s sophomore year hasn’t been ideal, with a reduction in snap counts and no recorded sacks this season. Bowles is optimistic about Braswell, anticipating more opportunities in the upcoming game against the Saints. “He’s got to get more reps,” Bowles said. “When he just pins his ears back and lets it go, he looks like the ‘Bras’ that we know.”

The Bucs’ pass rush remains formidable, having recorded 10 sacks over the last two games, led by Yaya Diaby, who has three of those sacks. However, Foote insists there needs to be consistent energy from the linebackers. “Energy and juice are what we need to succeed,” he stated.

Nelson carries experience that might be crucial against the Saints, who are struggling offensively. Tampa Bay’s defense must keep a close watch on players like Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave. With the Saints ranked low in run defense, the Bucs hope to dominate on the ground while maintaining pressure on quarterback Spencer Rattler.
