Cam Atkinson Columbus Blue Jackets Retirement

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cam Atkinson, one of the most decorated players in Columbus Blue Jackets history, signed a one-day contract on Thursday to officially retire with the team he spent the majority of his NHL career. The historic moment comes prior to the Blue Jackets’ game against the Colorado Avalanche.

Atkinson, who first joined the Blue Jackets in 2011, quickly became a fan favorite. Over his 10 seasons in Columbus, he played 627 games, scoring 213 goals and tallying 189 assists for a total of 402 points. He is recognized as the franchise leader in several key categories, including postseason goals, assists, and points.

After a strong preseason in 2011, Atkinson made the opening night roster and remembers that moment vividly. “Walking out from the room to go to the bench and calling my parents — that was truly a pinch-me moment,” he recalled during a press conference earlier today.

Today’s ceremony marks a poignant farewell for Atkinson, who expressed gratitude for his time with the Blue Jackets. “To go out on my own terms is truly humbling,” he said. Atkinson will don his iconic No. 13 jersey one last time, as friends and family gather to celebrate his legacy.

Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell praised Atkinson, highlighting his importance to the franchise and the community. “Cam was one of the first names I heard when I joined the organization,” Waddell said. “He is loved in this community.”

During his time with the Blue Jackets, Atkinson helped the team reach new heights, including playoff appearances from 2017 to 2019. He is remembered for his crucial contributions, including a pair of goals in a playoff game against Pittsburgh that energized his team.

Even after spending time with the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning later in his career, Atkinson’s heart remained with the Blue Jackets. As he prepares to retire, he reflects fondly on his time in Columbus and the bonds he formed with teammates.

Atkinson’s impact extends beyond the ice as well. He has been actively involved in charitable efforts in the Columbus community, supporting various causes. “I just hope that when people think of me, they think of not only my accomplishments but also my contributions to the community,” he said.

The emotional farewell will pave the way for Atkinson’s next chapter, as he hopes to inspire the next generation of hockey players in Columbus. “This is a dream come true,” he remarked about finishing his career where it all began.
