Cavaliers Edge Nets 131-124 After Late Brooklyn Rally
Brooklyn, NY — The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Brooklyn Nets 131-124 at Barclays Center on Friday night, securing their first victory of the NBA season.
Cleveland jumped out to an early lead, finishing the first quarter 34-23, largely due to Donovan Mitchell’s impressive 35 points, including six three-pointers. Jarrett Allen contributed 22 points and Sam Merrill added 22 points off the bench.
The Nets, looking to bounce back from a season-opening loss, struggled defensively but showed resilience throughout the game. Cam Thomas and Michael Porter Jr. led the charge for Brooklyn, combining for 64 points. Thomas finished with 33 points and nine assists, while Porter added 31 points and eight boards.
Despite falling behind by 25 points in the third quarter, the Nets staged a spirited comeback, reducing the deficit to just one point at 121-120 with under four minutes remaining. Ziaire Williams also made a significant contribution, scoring 25 points off the bench, including six three-pointers.
In the final moments of the game, Cleveland maintained their composure, with Merrill hitting four crucial free throws to secure the win. The Cavaliers shot 53.7% from the field as a team and hit 18 three-pointers during the game.
Nets head coach Jordi Fernández expressed pride in his players’ effort despite the loss, acknowledging the need for improvement. The Nets will aim to regroup as they prepare for a back-to-back series in Texas starting Sunday.
