Chelsea Survives Brighton in Draw, Manchester United Climbs Standings

Crawley, England — Chelsea FC women secured a dramatic 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion on March 2, serving as a wake-up call as Manchester United closed the gap in the Women’s Super League standings.
The match, played at Broadfield Stadium, saw Chelsea take the lead early through Sandy Baltimore’s volley in the 16th minute. Baltimore’s strike initially energized the visitors, but Brighton swiftly retaliated with two goals before halftime.
Brighton’s Marisa Olislagers equalized in the 22nd minute from a challenging angle, followed by Vicky Losada’s goal just before the break, putting the hosts ahead 2-1.
In the second half, Chelsea fought back valiantly. Lauren James found the net in the 61st minute, leveling the score after a rebounded effort from Mayra Ramirez. Although James appeared to be offside at the time of the initial shot, the referee allowed the goal to stand.
With this draw, Chelsea remains in first place with 41 points, five ahead of Manchester United, who secured a 2-0 victory over Leicester City simultaneously. Despite their lead, Chelsea has faced criticism for dropping points in recent matches, raising concerns about their title defense.
Manchester United has been impressive with a series of strong performances, including their latest win in which Melvine Malard scored the opening goal followed by Leah Galton’s effort in stoppage time.
Arsenal also demonstrated resilience, pulling off a comeback victory against West Ham United with a final score of 4-3. This result places Arsenal in third with 33 points, just ahead of fourth-place Manchester City, who defeated Tottenham 2-1.
“We had a bit of a sticky start after the international break,” said Jen Beattie, a former Scotland defender. “Brighton were aggressive and took advantage, but Chelsea showed their class to secure the draw and maintain momentum.”
This match served as a reminder of the competitiveness within the league, with Chelsea needing to tighten their defense as they aim for a sixth consecutive league title. The team’s resilience will be put to the test in upcoming matches against Sheffield United and Manchester City, critical games that could define their season.
Brighton, with this draw, remains mid-table with only 19 points and is still searching for their first win in seven league outings. The club must address their defensive frailties before they face Arsenal next weekend.
