Claudio Echeverri’s Future at Manchester City Grows Uncertain

Manchester, England – Claudio Echeverri‘s future at Manchester City remains uncertain as speculation rises ahead of the European transfer window. The young Argentine midfielder has yet to see any minutes on the field under manager Pep Guardiola. Recently, sports journalist Sam Lee cast doubt on Echeverri’s stint with the Citizens during his podcast, Let Me Talk.
Lee mentioned he received inquiries about Echeverri’s situation at City, responding bluntly, “Please, take Echeverri out of your mind. He will never play.” Though he is part of the first team’s training sessions, Echeverri has not made an official appearance or even been included in bench selections.
“I don’t think he’s that good, but obviously, they signed him for a reason,” Lee added, humorously suggesting that City may have plans to sell him in the future. His comments reflect a growing concern regarding Echeverri’s development and prospects at the club.
Manchester City previously executed a similar transaction with Máximo Perrone, who is currently on loan at an Italian club, sparking rumors of a permanent transfer. Lee further noted, “I believe he was never in the plans to play for City at the end of this season.”
Meanwhile, ESPN’s international version reported months ago that Echeverri’s future is unclear as he awaits opportunities to gain playing time. The young player will be closely evaluated during training sessions before a final decision is made.
The 19-year-old Echeverri has a contract with City until 2028 after completing a €24 million transfer from River Plate, which included performance bonuses. River had the opportunity to enjoy an extended loan for another year.
In an official interview with Manchester City, Echeverri discussed his move to the club and shared advice from former River coach Martín Demichelis. “I want to welcome you to Manchester City. It’s a club where I was immensely happy. I won’t advise you to dribble in England like you did in River. Just focus on learning the language; it will be helpful,” Demichelis advised.
Echeverri, who debuted for River in June 2023, scored four goals and made eight assists in 48 appearances. His standout performances came in the youth national team, where he netted five goals in the 2023 U-17 World Cup and six goals in the recent U-20 South American Championship that qualified Argentina for the upcoming World Cup.
