Coventry City Secures Fa Cup Victory Over Sheffield Wednesday: Rekindling Memories Of 1987 Triumph

Coventry City has once again etched its name in the history of the FA Cup, securing a remarkable victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the fourth round. This enthralling encounter between the two clubs has served as a poignant reminder of their clash in the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament back in 1987.

Notable figures from that era, George Curtis and John Sillett, who managed the Coventry City squad during their impressive cup run, have been honored with plans for a statue. Marking a historic moment, the current Coventry City players were able to revive memories of their predecessors as they stepped foot in Hillsborough, the home ground of Sheffield Wednesday once again.

Coventry City’s journey to this round had been marked with victories over Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United, and Stoke City in the previous rounds. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday held an incredible record of 23 consecutive FA Cup wins at Hillsborough, which came to an end on this momentous occasion on March 14, 1987.

It was Cyrille Regis who opened the scoring for Coventry City, displaying his brilliance on the field. After a skillful one-two with Dave Bennett, Regis embarked on a powerful run from the halfway line, unleashing a low shot into the back of Sheffield Wednesday’s net past Martin Hodge.

Despite being under pressure and enduring numerous attacks from the hosts, Coventry City managed to hold their ground. Eventually, Gary Megson of Sheffield Wednesday found the back of the net in the 66th minute, leveling the scoreline. However, Keith Houchen, a well-known FA Cup specialist, stole the show with two crucial goals in the 78th and 83rd minute, securing Coventry City’s victory and propelling them into the next round of the tournament. The ecstatic celebrations of the 15,000-strong Sky Blue Army echoed through the stadium.

Coventry City’s lineup on that victorious day included Ogrizovic, Borrows, Downs, Kilcline, Peake, Bennett, Phillips, McGrath, Pickering, Regis, and Houchen who played a vital role in clinching the memorable win.
