Cowboys Hire Nick Sorensen as Special Teams Coordinator
DALLAS, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly hired Nick Sorensen as their new special teams coordinator, according to sources. The announcement comes just days after the team introduced Brian Schottenheimer as their 10th head coach in franchise history.
Sorensen, who spent last season as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, brings prior special teams experience to the role. He most recently served as the special teams coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. NFL insider Tom Pelissero first reported the news on social media.
Schottenheimer and Sorensen previously crossed paths in Jacksonville during the 2021 season, when Schottenheimer was the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator. However, the Jaguars struggled that year, finishing 31st in special teams performance.
Most of Sorensen’s coaching career has been focused on defense, making this a notable shift. He replaces John Fassel, who left the Cowboys to take the same role with the Tennessee Titans. Fassel, known as a special teams expert, had held the position in Dallas for five years.
The Cowboys are also reportedly considering other candidates for coaching roles. On Saturday, they interviewed Chris Banjo, a former NFL player and current assistant special teams coach for the Denver Broncos, for the special teams coordinator position. Banjo has also been linked to similar roles with the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets.
As the Cowboys continue to build Schottenheimer’s staff, all eyes will be on how Sorensen adapts to his new responsibilities and whether he can elevate the team’s special teams performance in the upcoming season.
