Cubs Face Tough Decision with Crow-Armstrong and Happ Returning

CHICAGO, Ill. — After the Chicago Cubs‘ first sweep of the season, discussions have emerged about the lineup’s future, particularly regarding standout Pete Crow-Armstrong‘s role. During MLB’s rivalry weekend against the Chicago White Sox, Crow-Armstrong, known as PCA, delivered an impressive performance, contributing to 12 runs in three games.
PCA went 8-for-14 at the plate, including a home run, a double, and two triples. His efforts have not gone unnoticed; he currently leads the National League in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) with a score of 3.1 through 48 games. Since Ian Happ‘s injury about ten days ago, PCA has been stepping up, leading off for the Cubs.
In the last eight games, PCA has slashed an eye-popping .353/.361/.765 in 36 plate appearances. While the Cubs’ offense has been strong throughout the season, they have averaged over six runs per game with PCA atop the order. Happ, a veteran and strong leadoff hitter, has contributed significantly but has been sidelined due to injury.
Before his injury, Happ was leading with a .269 batting average and a .364 on-base percentage over 39 games. He brings experience and a keen eye for pitches, benefiting teammates like Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki. But PCA’s explosive playstyle makes him a serious threat, potentially eyeing a 40-home run and 40-steal season.
With Happ’s return imminent, Cubs manager Craig Counsell faces a pressing lineup decision. The most likely option would be to reinstate Happ in the leadoff position where he has excelled. However, there is speculation about the best way to utilize PCA’s talent, including possibly batting him second or keeping him in an active role near the top of the order.
“We have two really good options,” Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer said, emphasizing the strengths of both players. The Cubs will need to find a balance that maximizes the potential of both Happ and PCA as the season progresses.
