Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II Lead Mavericks to Season-Opening Win Over Spurs
The Dallas Mavericks kicked off their 2024-25 regular season with a 120-109 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, thanks in large part to the solid defensive performance of centers Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II. Gafford, who started the game, contributed nine points, six rebounds, a block, and a steal in 19 minutes, setting a physical tone before foul trouble limited his playing time.
Gafford’s selection as the starting center was influenced by his strong preseason performance and his history as a defensive anchor. Since joining the Mavericks, Gafford has a 32-12 record in starts across the regular season and playoffs, averaging 10.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks.
Dereck Lively II, who came off the bench, played a crucial role in energizing the team and anchoring the defense. The duo’s combined efforts were key in limiting San Antonio’s rising star Victor Wembanyama to just 17 points on 5-of-18 shooting, a significant factor in the Mavericks’ win.
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd praised the chemistry and defensive prowess of Gafford and Lively II, noting that they push each other in practice and are the anchors of the team’s defense. “It’s a beautiful thing to have,” Kidd said.
