Las Vegas, Nevada – Dustin Poirier weighed in on the ongoing debate between Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov during a fan Q&A at UFC 322 this week. Poirier, who has fought both champions, shared his insights about their fighting styles.

Poirier stated that he believes Makhachev has the advantage when striking. “Islam is a better complete fighter. He is better on the feet,” he told the audience. However, he acknowledged Khabib’s superior grappling skills, explaining, “But grappling, I think Khabib is better than Islam.”

His perspective is particularly valuable since he has faced both fighters in the octagon. Poirier first fought Khabib at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi in 2019. In that match, he almost secured a guillotine choke in the third round, showcasing a moment of near triumph before Khabib won by submission.

Years later, Poirier faced Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 in Newark, New Jersey. Many fans thought the fight was evenly matched heading into the final round, but Makhachev ultimately secured a choke that forced Poirier to tap.

In a post-fight interview with Ariel Helwani, Poirier discussed the differences he observed between the two fighters’ grappling. He noted that Makhachev relies on upper-body clinches, whereas Khabib prefers lower takedown techniques, making him feel physically strong.

Poirier mentioned that Makhachev’s grip during the D’Arce choke was unlike anything he had experienced before, describing it as a “vice grip.”

As Poirier prepares for his next steps in MMA after an intense career, he continues to be a voice in the community regarding both fighters. Makhachev is scheduled to compete against Jack Della Maddalena this weekend at UFC 322.
