PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia Eagles are contemplating a potential shift in their secondary as defensive coordinator Vic Fangio considers moving Cooper DeJean to outside cornerback. Fangio revealed that while the team had earlier hesitated due to a lack of a capable slot replacement, the recent acquisition of Michael Carter II could change that dynamic.

“We haven’t solved that yet,” Fangio said last month about the defensive lineup. “But Michael’s presence could make a difference.” Fangio emphasized Carter’s experience in the slot with over 2,000 snaps while playing for the Jets. “He’s a good nickel,” Fangio stated, hinting at a possible shift in strategy.

To execute this transition, two conditions must be met: the performance of the starting cornerback must dip, and Carter would need to quickly adapt to the team’s defensive playbook. Recently, cornerback Kelee Ringo‘s performance has improved, adding an extra layer of challenge to DeJean’s potential move.

“Cooper’s a little different in that all he played in college was corner,” Fangio said. “He can adjust quicker and better than most.” Currently, DeJean has primarily played in the slot, which has dictated the team’s recent decisions.

Meanwhile, cornerback Adoree' Jackson, who has faced competition from new acquisitions like Carter and Jakorian Bennett, expressed confidence in his ability to maintain his starting position. Jackson stated, “It was competition. I ain’t never been scared of competition.” With nine years in the league under his belt, Jackson remains focused on performing well and holding onto his role.

Jackson’s recent performance against the Green Bay Packers showcased his capabilities, as he allowed only two catches for 15 yards. “He’s going to battle, he’s going to compete every time,” teammate Quinyon Mitchell said of Jackson.

The Eagles face the Detroit Lions next, presenting a tough challenge with standout players Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams on the roster. Fangio has indicated he appreciates the options now available with Carter and Bennett back on the field, potentially reshaping the future of the Eagles’ secondary.

“Everything is on the table,” Fangio concluded, reflecting on the evolving strategy within the team’s defense.
