Eric Staal Joins Buffalo Sabres as Special Assistant to GM

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Sabres have hired 18-year NHL veteran Eric Staal as special assistant to General Manager Kevyn Adams, the team announced on May 7, 2025. In this new role, Staal will support all aspects of the hockey department, focusing on scouting and direct involvement with players and prospects.
“As I looked for ways to enhance our existing staff, I wanted to add somebody to our group that has a fresh perspective and the direct experience of winning at all levels of hockey,” Adams said in a statement. He noted that Staal was one of the first people he considered when he became GM. “It is fitting that he is the first addition to our organization this offseason. His experience and knowledge will be invaluable as we look to take the next step.”
Staal, a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, played the majority of his career with the Carolina Hurricanes. He also had brief stints with the Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, and Florida Panthers. He spent 32 games with the Sabres during the 2020-21 season.
Staal’s career is notable for his membership in the exclusive “Triple Gold Club,” having won a Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold medal, and a IIHF World Championship gold medal. He stands among the top 100 NHL players for career games played (1,365) and total points (1,063).
Reflecting on his short time in Buffalo, Staal said, “Although it was short, I loved my time in Buffalo. I had a glimpse of what makes the city such a special place and a terrific sports town.” He expressed gratitude to Adams for the opportunity and eagerness to contribute to the organization.
Adams and Staal share a history as teammates on the Hurricanes, where they won the Stanley Cup in 2006. As the Sabres aim to end their NHL-record 14-season playoff drought, Staal’s addition may signal a new era for the team.
