Emmy-nominated actor Ian McShane, known for his role in the hit series Deadwood, recently opened up about the peculiar requests he receives from fans and his personal vow to give up swearing.

McShane, who portrayed the character of the Gem Saloon owner in Deadwood from 2004 to 2006, disclosed that fans often approach him asking to be told to ‘fuck off,’ a request he finds bizarre.

Despite his character’s profane language on the show, McShane humorously shared that he usually declines the request by replying, ‘No. Why on earth would I say that to you?’ He commented on the peculiarity of such fan interactions, stating, ‘People are very strange.’

The British actor explained that he recently made a commitment to his wife to give up swearing, particularly after watching the Baftas together. Reflecting on his on-screen persona, McShane remarked, ‘It’s funny that I became king of the swear.’

Discussing his experience watching award shows like the Baftas, the Blackburn-born star pointed out the irony of actors swearing while observing the ceremonies. He found entertainment in the reactions of non-winning nominees, highlighting the insincere smiles and hidden resentments among attendees.

Deadwood, a critically acclaimed series, was abruptly cancelled by HBO after three seasons. It later saw a revival in the form of a 2019 film, which left fans eager for more.

The two-hour movie, directed by Daniel Minahan of Game of Thrones fame and written by Deadwood creator David Milch, hinted at the possibility of a series continuation based on its success. McShane teased the potential for another installment, stating, ‘If it makes $115M, HBO will somehow find a way to do another one.’
