Great Britain’s Alex Yee put on a spectacular show by winning the gold medal in the men’s triathlon during the Paris Olympics. The race started later than planned due to concerns about the cleanliness of the River Seine, but this didn’t hold Yee back. Coming in as a favorite, he faced an intense battle but managed to pull off a dramatic comeback.

Yee was behind by 14 seconds as he entered the last lap of the race. Despite feeling the pressure, the 26-year-old sprinted past his New Zealand competitor, Hayden Wilde, in an incredible finish just before crossing the finish line. Initially, Yee struggled after coming in 18th from the swimming segment but quickly regrouped during the cycling leg before making a decisive move during the running segment.

Supported by his teammate Sam Dickinson, who helped him gain position before he took the lead, Yee’s race was electrifying. Wilde maintained his lead for much of the run, but just as the final lap began, Yee found an extra gear and surged ahead, much to the amazement of onlookers.

Vicky Holland, who made history for Team GB by being the first female triathlete to medal in the Rio 2016 Olympics, praised Yee’s performance, describing it as one of the toughest runs she has seen at the Olympic level. Meanwhile, Team GB had another success earlier in the day when Beth Potter clinched the bronze medal in the women’s triathlon.

Potter, a former 10,000m track athlete, has come a long way since she decided to switch to triathlon, having watched Holland compete years prior. After finishing the swim in fifth place, she established herself among the leading cyclists before securing her podium finish on home soil in front of enthusiastic fans.
