Congressman Bennie Thompson Fires Staffer Over Controversial Social Media Post Following Trump Rally Shooting
Congressman Bennie Thompson has terminated a staff member, Jacqueline Marsaw, after she made a controversial social media post in the aftermath of a shooting incident at a rally involving former President Donald Trump.
Marsaw, who served as a case manager and field director for the Democratic U.S. Representative of Mississippi’s 2nd congressional district, was fired following a Facebook post that drew criticism from the Mississippi GOP.
In the now-deleted post, Marsaw wrote, ‘I don’t condone violence but please get you some shooting lessons so you don’t miss next time ooops that wasn’t me talking.’ She had also shared other contentious messages on the platform.
Thompson confirmed Marsaw’s termination, stating, ‘I was made aware of a post made by a staff member and she is no longer in my employment.’
The incident comes in the wake of an assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pa., where the shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, allegedly aimed a rifle at the former president before being shot and killed by Secret Service personnel.
Thompson, who had introduced legislation aimed at denying Trump Secret Service protection, has been a vocal critic of the former president, particularly regarding his alleged involvement in the events of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol.
