Football icon Ian Wright was overwhelmed with emotion as he marked his final appearance on Match of the Day, receiving a special gold cap during the poignant event.

The beloved presenter, Ian Wright, had previously announced his decision to depart from his long-standing pundit role on Match of the Day after this season.

On the emotional Sunday night, Wright bid farewell to the iconic highlights show, culminating over two decades of contributions to the football community.

Wright was joined by his regular co-presenters, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, as they shared highlights from the latest Premier League matches.

The 60-year-old’s emotions were palpable from the start of the show, and a tear-jerking moment arrived when Lineker presented him with a special gold cap to commemorate his tenure.

A moving montage showcasing Wright’s best moments as a Match of the Day pundit was aired, featuring touching messages from his family and friends, elevating the sentimental atmosphere.

Returning to the studio wearing the special cap, Wright paid tribute to his colleagues, expressing his deep appreciation for the show and the camaraderie with Lineker and Shearer.

Reflecting on his cherished memories, Wright shared, «Match of the Day means the whole world to me. I’ve got my eight, nine, ten, my two guys who I love so much on there. People laugh at me for getting my eight, nine, ten, Gary Lineker, and Alan Shearer but it’s because I love you man. You’re my guys.»

In response, Shearer expressed, «We’ll miss you on Saturdays,» with Lineker humorously noting they would reunite at the upcoming FA Cup final, where Wright will feature in ITV’s coverage.

Lineker added a heartfelt message, stating, «It’s been an absolute pleasure and a delight to work with you for so long. You’re a breath of fresh air and you always have been. Thank you.»

However, the final day of the Premier League season did not bring the ideal conclusion for Wright, as his beloved Arsenal narrowly missed out on reclaiming the title which has eluded them for two decades.

Reflecting on his decision to exit Match of the Day, Wright had previously explained that it was a culmination of long consideration, with his 60th birthday accelerating his resolution to explore new ventures on weekends.
