Former boxing world champion Dingaan Thobela, famously known as the ‘Rose of Soweto’, was discovered deceased at his residence in Johannesburg after a period of deteriorating health.

The 57-year-old Thobela, who hailed from Chiawelo in Soweto, had a remarkable career, holding three world titles in two weight divisions – the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight belts, along with the prestigious World Boxing Council (WBC) super-middleweight belt.

The news of Thobela’s passing was confirmed by his childhood friend, Eddie Mutungutungu, who revealed that Thobela was found in his flat in Mayfair, Johannesburg, following unsuccessful attempts to reach him.

Thobela, who had been battling illness, was notably absent from a recent Boxing SA symposium due to his health issues.

During his career, Thobela achieved significant victories under the guidance of renowned trainers such as Norman Hlabane and Elias Tshabalala, making him a beloved figure in South African sports.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Thobela’s personal life included a relationship with his common-law wife, Sandra, with whom he had two children – Ntombi and Dingaan Thobela Junior.

The passing of Thobela comes shortly after the loss of another boxing figure, Joseph Makaringe, highlighting the impact of these athletes in the South African sports community.

Thobela’s legacy extends far beyond his achievements in the ring, with his influence reaching fans across the country and showcasing the power of sports to unite communities.
