Iowa State Vs Drake Basketball 2024

AMES, Iowa – No. 8 Iowa State University returns to its home court at Hilton Coliseum to confront Drake University, wrapping up a series of in-state rivalry games this week. After experiencing their first loss of the season against the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), primarily due to offensive difficulties in the second half, the Cyclones aim to secure their fifth home victory of the season.

Their recent match against UNI saw the Cyclones fall 87-75, although players like center Audi Crooks and forward Addy Brown stood out with double-doubles, Crooks scoring 22 points with 10 rebounds and Brown contributing 21 points with 12 rebounds.

In similar fashion, Drake University also succumbed to an in-state opponent, facing their second defeat with an 86-73 loss to the University of Iowa. Despite starting strong with a 25-21 lead after the first quarter, Drake struggled as Iowa tightened their defense in the second quarter, capping Drake’s score to a mere 10 points and setting a challenging hurdle for the remainder of the game.

Drake managed to convert only two out of 13 attempted field goals and two of six 3-point shots. Iowa capitalized on the opportunity by maintaining a consistent lead, achieving a 52.3% field goal rate, although the Hawkeyes’ 3-point shooting lacked precision, achieving just seven out of 20 attempts.

According to Iowa State guard Arianna Jackson, understanding Drake’s quick offense and adjusting defense will be key for the Cyclones. «They get the ball out fast and try to transition quickly. Applying pressure before they set their offense will be essential for us,» Jackson remarked.

Drake’s senior guard Katie Dinnebier led the Bulldogs with a remarkable season-high of 40 points, giving vital assists and contributing defensively with three steals. With Jackson aiming to counter Dinnebier, Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly hopes to reduce mistakes and enhance defensive efficiency. «We need Jackson to play smarter and be on the court for more than 17 minutes, which wasn’t enough against UNI,» Fennelly stated.

The upcoming face-off between Iowa State and Drake University is scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m. on Sunday and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ for viewers.
