Jay Shah Elected as New ICC Chairman, Setting a Historic Precedent
Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been unanimously elected as the new Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). At the age of 35, Shah has become the youngest individual to assume this prestigious position in the organization’s history.
Shah succeeds Greg Barclay, who recently announced that he would not seek re-election after completing his term. As the new Chairman, Shah is set to lead ICC’s mission to expand cricket globally and ensure it remains a prominent sport in the international arena.
Commencing his journey in cricket administration in 2009, Jay Shah played a pivotal role in various capacities, including serving as the Joint Secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) and contributing significantly to the development of grassroots cricket in the region. He was also instrumental in the renovation and construction of the world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
In a statement regarding Shah’s appointment, BCCI President Roger Binny congratulated him on this significant achievement, emphasizing his strong contributions as BCCI Secretary and President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
Historically, the role of ICC Chairman saw its first Indian occupant in Jagmohan Dalmiya, who served from 1997 to 2000, followed by Shard Pawar from 2010 to 2012. The ICC Chairman position was dissolved in 2016, transforming into the role of Chairperson.
The complete list of Indian ICC Chairmen includes Jagmohan Dalmiya, Shard Pawar, N. Srinivasan, Shashank Manohar, and now Jay Shah.
