Mother’s Day Celebrations in Los Angeles County Honor Mothers Across the Region
Today in Los Angeles County, mothers are being honored with special celebrations to mark Mother’s Day. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is presenting carnations to mothers attending Masses. Archbishop José H. Gomez will lead multiple Masses, where blessings will be bestowed upon all mothers present. These Masses will be streamed online for wider participation.
Archbishop Gomez highlights the significance of motherhood in the Catholic faith, emphasizing the role of mothers as the first teachers in prayer, charity, and Christian faith practices. The day also marks the beginning of a prayer petition collection for the intercession of the Blessed Mother Mary, with a special Mass scheduled for July 6 in Mexico City.
Simultaneously, Hillside Memorial Park & Mortuary will host a remembrance service in Culver City. Rabbi Cantor Alison Wissot of Temple Judea will lead the service, offering music, song, and prayer in tribute to all mothers. The event will be livestreamed.
Attendees will have the opportunity to share stories and memories of their mothers, creating a heartfelt atmosphere of love and remembrance. In another part of the county, Vallarta Supermarkets will hold their Mother’s Day Serenade featuring the Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, a beloved musical group.
President Joe Biden‘s Mother’s Day proclamation urges gratitude towards mothers and remembrance of those who have lost mothers or children. The history of Mother’s Day traces back to activist Julia Ward Howe and later to Anna Jarvis, culminating in the national recognition of Mother’s Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914.
