A new statue of Queen Elizabeth II was revealed in the town of Oakham, England, on the day that would have marked her 98th birthday. The seven-foot-tall bronze memorial, crafted by artist Hywel Pratley, stands next to Oakham Library in Rutland. The statue portrays the late monarch as a young woman, dressed in ceremonial robes and wearing the George IV Diadem on her head, with the Order of the Garter sash across her gown and one of her beloved corgis by her side.

The inscription on the statue reads, «Queen Elizabeth II, 1926 – 2022. Erected as a tribute to her late Majesty through public subscription by Rutland people.» The unveiling ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Sarah Furness, Bishop of Peterborough Debbie Sellins, and Alicia Kearns MP. The event featured music performances by the Harrington School Band and Oakham School Band, further commemorating the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Pratley, the sculptor behind the memorial, had previously shared glimpses of his creation, which also includes two additional bronze corgis at the base of the statue. The artwork was funded by donations from local businesses and members of the public, highlighting the community’s respect and admiration for the long-reigning monarch.

Sarah Ferguson, former member of the royal family, received Queen Elizabeth II’s corgis following her passing at the age of 96. Beyond her formal duties, the queen was known for her love of the breed and her attachment to her loyal canine companions. Pratley’s statue captures this warmth and humanity, portraying the queen in a relatable light that resonates with the public.
