NLC Holds Meeting with Tinubu, Anticipates N250,000 Minimum Wage for Nigerian Workers
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to engage in crucial deliberations with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Thursday. One of the main agenda items is the proposal for a new minimum wage of N250,000 for Nigerian workers, marking a significant increase from the current wage rate.
The meeting, scheduled to take place at the Presidential Villa, comes amidst ongoing discussions between the NLC, government, and private sector stakeholders regarding the new minimum wage policy. Prior to this, discussions were halted to allow for more engagement with relevant parties before presenting an executive bill to the National Assembly.
President Tinubu initiated the meeting following his commitment to further consultations with stakeholders to address the minimum wage issue, as outlined in his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024. The Nigerian government is actively seeking to formulate a comprehensive national minimum wage framework that considers the economic realities and welfare of the workforce.
Moreover, the NLC, a prominent labour union in the country, has been advocating for substantial wage increments in response to the rising cost of living. The proposed N250,000 minimum wage reflects the pressing need to enhance the standard of living for Nigerian workers amid economic challenges and inflationary pressures.
Notably, the NLC has been at the forefront of championing fair labour practices and advocating for improved working conditions across various sectors. With President Tinubu’s engagement, the union aims to advance its position and negotiate a viable minimum wage agreement that aligns with the current economic context.
