The Parramatta Eels have made a significant decision to part ways with their Head Coach Brad Arthur after a string of disappointing performances, culminating in a recent loss during Magic Round. Despite reports surfacing recently, the termination of Arthur’s contract had actually been decided weeks ago without the players’ prior knowledge.

Reports confirmed the news of the sacking on Monday evening, revealing that the club had been in talks with Arthur to potentially steer him away from joining South Sydney Rabbitohs, a move that ultimately did not materialize.

Fox League, available on Kayo, broadcasted the news and shed light on the behind-the-scenes process that led to Arthur’s dismissal. The Daily Telegraph‘s Buzz Rothfield provided insights during Fox League’s NRL 360 show, detailing the timeline of events, including the surprising revelation that the decision was made as early as May 1.

According to Rothfield’s account, Arthur was summoned to a meeting with Jim Sarantinos and Sean McElduff, where he was promptly informed that his contract had been terminated. Subsequently, the senior playing group and the rest of the top 30 were notified of the decision, with an official announcement following thereafter.

Despite the Eels’ recent poor form, which included a heavy defeat at the hands of a depleted Storm side, Arthur had expressed post-match that there had been no indication of impending trouble from the club’s end. The decision was made based on the board’s assessment that the team’s progress had hit a plateau and a new direction was necessary for future success.

The Eels issued a statement acknowledging Arthur’s dedication over the past decade, which saw the team make multiple finals appearances, including a grand final in 2022. Trent Barrett has been appointed as the Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2024 season, with plans for a permanent Head Coach for the upcoming seasons.
