Renowned Actress Kanakalatha Passes Away After Prolonged Illness
Renowned actress Kanakalatha, known for her versatile performances in over 350 films in various languages, passed away at her residence in Thiruvananthapuram after a long battle with Parkinson’s and subsequently Alzheimer’s diseases.
Born on August 24, 1960, in Kerala‘s Kollam district, Kanakalatha began her acting career after completing her primary education at Parishad Pills High School. She made her debut in the film ‘Chilla’ in 1982 and went on to be an integral part of the Malayalam cinema industry.
In 1989, she took a step back from acting to focus on her personal life, and despite her illnesses, she remained dedicated to her craft, depicting memorable characters in films such as ‘Jagratha,’ ‘Kiritam,’ ‘Ente Sooryaputhrikku,’ and many more.
However, in 2021, her health began to deteriorate, and she was diagnosed with psychiatric issues, which later led to the onset of Alzheimer’s, as confirmed by M.R.A. Scanning.
Vijayamma, her sister, expressed the family’s journey through the various illnesses Kanakalatha faced, from the initial symptoms to her final days spent at the Parumala Hospital.
Known for her roles in iconic films like ‘Kauravar,’ ‘Aniyathipravu,’ ‘Harikrishnans,’ ‘Thacholi Varghese Chekavar,’ to name a few, Kanakalatha’s final on-screen appearance was in the film ‘Poochakkalam.’ Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of her fans and the Malayalam cinema industry.
