Rising Concern over KP.3 Variant as Hospital Admissions Increase in UK and US
Amidst a surge in COVID-19 cases, the emergence of the KP.3 variant has raised significant concerns in both the UK and the US. According to recent data released by health agencies, KP.3 has quickly become the dominant variant, surpassing previously prominent strains such as JN.1 and KP.2. Originating from the FLiRT group of variants, which are offshoots of the JN.1 lineage, KP.3 has showcased a remarkable ability to spread rapidly.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), led by spokesperson Rosa Norman, have been closely monitoring the situation. The CDC’s Nowcast data tracker provides insights into the prevalence of COVID variants over a two-week period. While the tool helps estimate current variant distribution, it does not forecast future virus spread. As of the latest data between June 9 and June 22, KP.3 accounts for a significant 33.1% of positive cases, followed by KP.2 at 20.8% and JN.1 at a mere 1.6%.
Characterized by symptoms akin to JN.1, KP.3 has prompted health officials to emphasize the importance of vaccination. Norman encourages individuals aged 6 months and above to receive the 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccine, stressing its role in preventing severe illness. Symptoms associated with the variants, as outlined by the CDC, range from mild to severe and may manifest within two to 14 days post exposure.
Across the pond, the UK Health Security Agency has noted a troubling trend. Hospital admissions due to confirmed COVID-19 cases linked to KP.3 have surged, particularly among the elderly population. Enhancing the seriousness of the situation, virologists like Professor Lawrence Young from Warwick University have forewarned of a possible summer wave of COVID. Professor Young underscored the persistent threat posed by the virus, debunking notions of its seasonality.
Analogous concerns reverberate in the US, where KP.3 has eclipsed previous variants, making up 25% of COVID-19 cases. The FLiRT variants, including KP.3, KP.2, and KP.1.1, are under intense scrutiny for their transmissibility and impact on hospital admissions. Notably, the swift ascent of KP.3 has triggered apprehensions about a looming surge in infections.
As health authorities intensify efforts to curb the spread of the KP.3 variant, vigilance and vaccination remain paramount. With COVID-19-related deaths and hospitalizations on the rise, prioritizing public health measures and adherence to guidelines are crucial in combating the evolving landscape of the pandemic.
