After a fierce battle, the world’s number one, Iga Świątek, claimed the Madrid Open title by outlasting the second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in a nail-biting final lasting 3 hours and 11 minutes.

Świątek, a triple Roland-Garros champion, secured the victory at her second opportunity with sheer determination, overcoming three match points in favor of Sabalenka, ultimately winning the tiebreaker 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7).

«Who will dare say that women’s tennis is dull now?» remarked Świątek after her triumph at the longest WTA final of 2024.

This victory marked the 20th title of Świątek’s young career, boosting her confidence ahead of Roland-Garros where she will defend her crown in three weeks.

The intense match showcased a high level of play from both players, with Sabalenka showcasing power and Świątek demonstrating resilience and daring shot-making.

Świątek now completes her collection of major European clay-court titles after adding Madrid to her list of victories in Stuttgart, Rome, and Roland-Garros.
