Sydney’s Iconic Luna Park Listed for Sale After Two Decades Under Brookfield Ownership
Sydney’s harbourside amusement park, Luna Park, a beloved entertainment venue that has been a part of the city’s social and cultural tapestry for over 90 years, is now up for sale for the first time in two decades. The 3.1-hectare site, located at Milsons Point in New South Wales, is currently owned by global investment firm Brookfield and managed by the Luna Park Reserve Trust ensuring conservation for future generations to enjoy.
Luna Park, famous for its art deco charm and iconic rides, such as the Big Dipper and Coney Island, has seen a resurgence in recent years under the leadership of chief executive John Hughes. With a $40 million upgrade over the past four years, the park has introduced new rides and immersive experiences, leading to record visitation numbers and cementing its status as a popular Sydney landmark.
Handling the landmark sale is commercial real estate agency CBRE, with Simon Rooney at the helm. The sale is expected to draw significant interest from both local and international investors, eager to acquire a piece of Sydney’s history and secure the future of Luna Park as a thriving entertainment destination.
Throughout its storied history, Luna Park has faced challenges, including temporary closures and the tragic events of 1979 when six children and an adult perished in a fire on the ghost train ride. The subsequent investigations and closures did not diminish the park’s enduring appeal, and Luna Park has continued to entertain millions of visitors, hosting events like Halloscream and collaborating on citywide festivals such as Vivid.
The North Sydney council mayor, Zoë Baker, emphasized the importance of Luna Park in providing recreation and entertainment for the community, underscoring the efforts to preserve its historical and cultural significance. Luna Park’s legacy is further enriched by recent additions like the Dream Circus immersive experience and its hosting of various high-profile events.
