Telkom Mobile Network Outage: Customers Receive Free Data as Apology
A major network outage affected Telkom mobile users in South Africa on Monday, leading to widespread connectivity issues. The disruption was first noticed around 2pm, causing an influx of complaints on Downdetector.co.za, a platform that tracks network problems.
Users across the country, including those in Johannesburg, experienced complete inaccessibility to Telkom’s mobile network. Some phones displayed a ‘no service’ message, indicating the severity of the outage.
Despite recent undersea cable faults impacting Africa’s east coast, this outage was separate, emphasizing the network complexities involved. Social media platforms, including X, were flooded with complaints from frustrated Telkom customers.
Telkom acknowledged the national outage, confirming the network issue. By late afternoon, after concerted efforts, Telkom restored services. However, further synchronization was necessary in certain network areas.
In response to the disruption, Telkom opted to appease customers by offering a gesture of goodwill. Each customer is set to receive 1GB of Telkom mobile data as a token of apology, redeemable for two days.
