Microsoft Shutting Down African Development Centre in Lagos, Impacting Over 500 Jobs

Microsoft is reportedly in the process of closing down its African Development Centre (ADC) located in Ikoyi, Lagos, a decision that is expected to have a significant impact on over 500 jobs directly linked to the innovation hub.

Established in 2019, the African Development Centre was part of Microsoft’s initiative to create technology solutions from Africa to address both local and global challenges. The centre, which also housed the Microsoft Garage for nurturing local innovations, aimed to foster technological growth and innovation in the region.

The news of Microsoft’s decision to shut down the innovation centre in Lagos comes amidst economic challenges faced by businesses in Nigeria, coupled with the tough operating environment and unfavourable economic conditions.

Sources close to Microsoft Nigeria revealed that the company informed its staff on Monday about the impending closure of the innovation centre, leaving many employees uncertain about their future.

Responding to the media reports, a senior staff member at Microsoft neither confirmed nor denied the information but indicated that an official statement from Microsoft addressing the closure would be provided soon.

While no official reason has been given for the move, it is speculated that the decision to shut down the African Development Centre in Lagos may be attributed to financial losses and the challenging business landscape in the country.

Furthermore, Microsoft’s parallel decision to close several gaming studios, including the renowned Arkane Austin, underlines the company’s strategic restructuring efforts amid economic headwinds.

Despite the closure of the Lagos innovation hub, Microsoft’s operations in Kenya are expected to continue, as the company navigates its presence in Africa and evaluates its investment strategies in various regions.
