Former MP Chuck Strahl Dies at 67
Chuck Strahl, a well-known former MP from Chilliwack, B.C., has passed away at the age of 67. His family shared the sad news on social media, revealing that he fought bravely against mesothelioma, a rare type of cancer.
Strahl served in the Canadian House of Commons for over 17 years, winning six consecutive elections. He began his political career in 1993, representing the Fraser Valley East riding before moving on to the newly formed Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon riding in 2004.
During his time in government, Strahl held various important positions in former Prime Minister Stephen Harper‘s cabinet. He was the minister of agriculture, transportation, and also worked with Indigenous affairs, where he played a key role in negotiating important agreements.
His family described him as a wonderful person who was their best friend and a steadfast supporter. They emphasized that he never let his job define him, always prioritizing his faith, family, and friends above all.
Born in New Westminster, B.C. on February 25, 1957, Strahl’s family moved around rural British Columbia before settling in Chilliwack when he was just 10 years old. He married Debby Bateman in 1975, and together they raised four children and had 13 grandchildren.
Chuck Strahl faced health challenges in the past, announcing he had lung cancer in 2005. Despite this, he continued to work in politics until he retired from the House of Commons in 2011. He later chaired the security intelligence review committee overseeing the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.
Following his passing, tributes poured in, including a heartfelt message from the current Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who praised Strahl’s dedication to Canada and considered him a man of principle and integrity.
