Former Real Madrid Star Criticizes Frenkie De Jong's Playing Style At Barcelona

Former Real Madrid and Netherlands football star, Rafael van der Vaart, has made critical comments about the playing style of fellow countryman, Frenkie de Jong, at FC Barcelona. Van der Vaart’s analysis came following Barca’s 1-1 draw with Napoli in the Champions League last 16 clash.

Van der Vaart, speaking on the television channel Ziggo Sport, expressed his concerns about de Jong’s performance during the match. The former Real Madrid player described de Jong’s style of play as slow and likened it to that of a postman.

Regarding the match itself, FC Barcelona initially took the lead through a goal by Robert Lewandowski before Napoli equalized, putting the tie at 1-1. Van der Vaart did not just focus on de Jong but also criticized Barcelona’s overall approach, especially their corner-taking tactics.

The former Real Madrid midfielder’s remarks regarding corners highlighted his frustration with the current trend of playing short passes before delivering the ball into the box. Van der Vaart emphasized the need for faster and more dynamic play in such situations.

Van der Vaart, who had a short stint at Real Madrid from 2008 to 2010, has been vocal about de Jong’s potential departure from Barca. In the past, he recommended that de Jong consider a move to Manchester United to reunite with his former Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag.

While de Jong was previously linked with a move to Manchester United, he ultimately stayed at Barcelona. However, recent reports suggest that Tottenham Hotspur has shown interest in acquiring the services of the 26-year-old midfielder, with a rumored bid of $65 million (€60 million) being reported by SPORT.
