Former Netherlands International Quincy Promes Sentenced for Cocaine Smuggling

Former Netherlands international, Quincy Promes, who currently plays for Spartak Moscow, has been sentenced to six years in prison by the Amsterdam District Court for his involvement in a drug smuggling ring.

The court found Promes guilty of partaking in the import and export of hundreds of kilograms of cocaine in 2020, a scheme involving shipments of salt from Brazil to the Netherlands through the port of Antwerp in Belgium.

Despite the charges, Promes, who previously played for Ajax and Sevilla, resides in Moscow and did not attend his trial in Amsterdam. His lawyers maintain his denial of the allegations.

Prosecutors had initially sought a nine-year sentence for Promes over his role in the smuggling operation that saw 1,360kg of cocaine transported.

The court’s verdict highlighted phone tap evidence revealing Promes’ direct involvement in the drug shipments, labeling his actions as particularly egregious given his high-profile status as a well-paid footballer with a significant following.

Promes’ legal team has indicated plans to appeal the verdict, aiming to overturn the sentence imposed by the Amsterdam District Court.

In a separate legal issue, Promes was also previously sentenced to 18 months in jail for assault, related to an incident where he stabbed a cousin during a fight in 2020. He has appealed that sentence as well.

Throughout his career, the former Dutch international, who scored seven goals in 50 national team appearances, has faced off-field challenges while playing in various top clubs like Ajax and Sevilla.
