Athens, October 9 (Reuters) – British-born footballer George Baldock, who played as a defender for Panathinaikos and the Greek national team, was found dead in his swimming pool in Glyfada, a suburb of southern Athens. Greek police reported on Wednesday that his body was discovered under unclear circumstances.

The cause of death for the 31-year-old remains unknown following initial police investigations. Authorities attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) without success, and the time of death was estimated at 10 p.m. local time (1900 GMT).

Baldock, who was of Greek descent, had been capped 12 times by Greece and recently signed a three-year contract with Panathinaikos after departing from Sheffield United, where he spent seven years following their relegation from the Premier League. In his brief stint at Panathinaikos, Baldock made four appearances, the most recent being a 0-0 draw against Olympiakos.

The Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection confirmed the tragic news to CNN, highlighting that a preliminary investigation led by the Attica Security Directorate is ongoing. “A forensic pathologist found no signs of foul play,” the ministry stated. “The police have ruled out any criminal activity at the site following an inspection by the Forensic Investigations Directorate,” it added.

With former clubs Sheffield United and the national Greek football community mourning his untimely demise, tributes have poured in. Sheffield United expressed profound sadness and shock, referring to Baldock as a well-loved figure at Bramall Lane during his seven-year tenure.

Panathinaikos issued a statement expressing their devastation: “We are shocked and feel appalled by the loss of our George. The Panathinaikos family mourns his sudden death at this difficult time.”

The Greek national team also released an official statement on Facebook, recognizing Baldock’s contribution: “With deep sympathy and pain, we announce the passing of George Baldock. There are no words to describe the pain caused by losing one of our own. The moment calls for silence.”

Throughout his career, Baldock started at clubs such as MK Dons, Oxford United, and Northampton Town before achieving prominence at Sheffield United in the Premier League. Fellow footballers, including England’s Harry Maguire, have expressed their condolences on social media, highlighting Baldock’s impact both on and off the pitch.
