Italy Faces Norway in World Cup Qualifier Showdown

OSLO, Norway — Italy will kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign Friday at 2:45 p.m. ET against Norway in Oslo, aiming to qualify for their first World Cup in 12 years.
Norway currently leads Group I with six points after two games, while Italy has yet to play a qualifier, having reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Nations League in March. The Azzurri‘s recent World Cup history includes disappointing failures to qualify in 2018 and 2022 after winning the title in 2006. Coach Luciano Spalletti is determined to return Italy to the world stage.
Norway has set its sights on its first World Cup appearances since 1998, led by star players Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard. The Røde, Hvite, Blå (Red, White and Blue) are expected to finish in the top two of their group for a chance at the playoffs.
This match is vital for Italy, who are in desperate need of a strong start. With a +7 goal difference, Norway will seek to capitalize on their impressive form. The game will take place at Ullevaal Stadion.
Italy will be without key players due to injuries, including Manuel Locatelli and Matteo Gabbia, while Norway’s Erik Botheim and Stian Gregeren are also sidelined. Norway’s size and physicality may create challenges for Italy early in the match.
Kickoff is set for 2:45 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcasted on Fox Sports.
