João Fonseca Returns to ATP Tour at Madrid Open

Madrid, Spain — Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca, currently ranked 65th in the ATP, is set to return to the court after a month-long hiatus at the Madrid Open. Fonseca will face Danish player Elmer Moller, who is ranked 114th, in the first round on Thursday, April 24.
The match is scheduled to take place at the Manolo Santana Stadium, although the exact time remains uncertain. It is expected to begin no earlier than 12:30 p.m. Brasília time, depending on the outcome of a previous women’s match between Alexandra Eala and Iga Swiatek, which started around 10:40 a.m.
Moller, a 21-year-old from Aarhus, Denmark, secured his spot in the main draw by winning two qualifying matches, including a victory over Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak with scores of 5-7, 6-4, and 6-4. Known for his powerful game on clay courts, Moller plays right-handed and is trained to execute a two-handed backhand.
João Fonseca’s last tournament was the Miami Open at the end of March, where he was eliminated in the third round. In the lead-up to the Madrid Open, Fonseca trained intensively in Rio de Janeiro, preparing for the clay-court season ahead.
If Fonseca defeats Moller, he will likely face American Tommy Paul, who is seeded 12th and has already qualified for the second round. A potential quarterfinal matchup could see Fonseca pitted against top players such as Novak Djokovic or Alex de Minaur.
In 2025, Fonseca has already claimed three titles, making this tournament another critical step in his budding career.
