John Stones England Captain

England’s interim manager, Lee Carsley, has confirmed that John Stones will captain the national team in their upcoming UEFA Nations League match against Greece at Wembley Stadium. This decision comes as regular captain Harry Kane is set to start on the bench due to minor injury concerns.

Kane, who suffered a knock during Bayern Munich‘s final game before the international break, has been training separately from his England teammates. Carsley hinted that while Kane might not start, he could play a part later in the match. “Harry is nursing an injury, a small knock, something we won’t take a chance with,” Carsley stated. He also mentioned that Kane might be ready to face Finland on Sunday.

For Stones, this will be his first time leading the England team from the start. Expressing his joy at being named captain, Stones said, “It’s everything I could have dreamed of as a kid. Walking out with the armband on is an absolute honour and a moment I’ll cherish forever.” Stones will make his 82nd appearance for his country.

Alongside Kane, Jack Grealish is also dealing with a “slight knock” and could miss the upcoming match. Carsley emphasized the importance of player health, stating, “Our attitude would be we wouldn’t gamble with any of the players. It’s important we put them first rather than ourselves.”

England has called up Curtis Jones and Tino Livramento to increase training numbers ahead of the fixture. There is also considerable focus on Chelsea‘s Cole Palmer, who has been in excellent form recently. Carsley praised the young forward, saying, “Cole is in fantastic form. He’s carried that into this week. Such an exciting player.” Palmer, who left Manchester City for Chelsea in 2023, has earned praise from teammates and coaches alike.

As England prepares to face Greece, who currently leads Group B2 based on goal difference, there is heightened competition for starting positions. This match is seen as pivotal in determining which team will top the group and secure promotion to League A.
