Jonny Clayton, known affectionately as “The Ferret,” has revealed he nearly stepped away from professional darts after experiencing a decline in motivation and personal loss. Clayton, who secured major victories including the Premier League Darts and the World Grand Prix in 2021, has faced a challenging period both on and off the oche.

Clayton’s difficulties began following the death of his father in July 2023, an event that significantly impacted his personal life and professional focus. Speaking after a recent victory over Ritchie Edhouse in the World Grand Prix at Leicester, Clayton expressed a renewed passion for the sport. “For the last year, I’ve not been bothered at all but now there’s fire in the belly again,” he stated. “I’m hungry. The new Ferret is back,” Clayton declared confidently.

The revelation of his struggles adds context to a challenging 2024 season for Clayton. Reflecting on the year, he candidly remarked, “If I could swear, that would be the honest answer. My season’s not been great but, like I said, there’s fight in my belly again. I don’t like losing, it’s not nice losing all the time.”

Clayton demonstrated his returning form against Edhouse, where he delivered 130 and 102 checkouts to seize the opening set with an impressive 102 average, securing his place in the second round against Ross Smith. In a separate match, Luke Humphries mounted a dramatic comeback against Stephen Bunting, displaying resilience characteristic of a champion as he progressed in defending his title.

As Clayton prepares to face Ross Smith, his resolve seems to fortify his ambitions to reclaim his former glory in the sport. Their previous encounters suggest a closely contested match, with Smith having the edge in recent outings. Smith himself is coming off a strong performance, noted for his proficiency in hitting 180s, and will likely provide a stern test for Clayton.
