Laura Loomer, a prominent far-right activist known for her controversial statements, has drawn criticism after launching a series of homophobic attacks against U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband Chasten Buttigieg. The incident unfolded on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where Loomer questioned the legitimacy of the Buttigiegs’ parenting and employed derogatory language.

Loomer’s remarks were sparked by a post from Pete Buttigieg, in which he mocked former President Donald Trump‘s claim at a town hall event of being the “father of IVF.” Buttigieg highlighted the contradiction in Trump’s statement, noting the potential impact of anti-abortion laws on fertility treatments in states with Republican-led governments.

Responding to Buttigieg’s post, Loomer launched into a tirade, falsely suggesting that the couple’s decision to raise children as a same-sex couple constitutes psychological abuse. She accused the Buttigiegs of depriving their children of essential maternal care, echoing anti-LGBTQ sentiments that have been discredited and challenged by family rights advocates.

Chasten Buttigieg responded to the vitriol by emphasizing the need to stay focused on constructive political discourse and advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. He questioned whether such attitudes, prevalent among Trump’s allies, should influence federal policies affecting families and childcare.

The Buttigiegs, who adopted twins in 2021, are among a growing number of LGBTQ+ families in the United States. According to research by the Williams Institute at UCLA, between 2 million and 3.7 million children are being raised by LGBTQ+ parents, a testament to the evolving dynamics of modern American families.

Loomer’s attack also included a reference to a debunked image of Pete Buttigieg purportedly breastfeeding, a narrative she used to ridicule the notion of gay men as parents. The image, widely circulated on social media, has been consistently fact-checked and identified as false.

Loomer remains a staunch Trump supporter, despite being deemed too extreme by some of the more ardent members of the conservative movement. Her repeated association with Trump and his allies raises questions about the endorsement of such rhetoric within political circles.

As the dispute over LGBTQ+ parenting continues, it underscores the broader cultural and political debates regarding family structures in the United States. With upcoming elections, the clash between conservative traditionalism and progressive inclusivity is likely to influence voter sentiment and political campaigning strategies.
