Lee Carsley has revealed his first squad selection as the interim manager of the England national football team, emphasizing the inclusion of young talent. Among the notable additions are uncapped players Noni Madueke, Morgan Gibbs-White, Tino Livramento, and Angel Gomes, all receiving their first senior call-ups.

This squad announcement comes in the wake of Gareth Southgate‘s departure following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Carsley has stepped up from his role as the Under-21 boss to take charge temporarily.

An eye-catching omission from the squad is Kyle Walker, who served as vice-captain in the recent tournament but has not seen playtime this season with Manchester City. Carsley noted that Walker’s lack of minutes contributed to his absence from the squad for the Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

In contrast, Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish have returned to the squad despite being left out during the Euro 2024 campaign. Injuries have sidelined key players such as Jude Bellingham and Luke Shaw, while Kieran Trippier has announced his international retirement.

Carsley acknowledged that players like Ben White and members of the Euro 2024 squad, including Ivan Toney, Aaron Ramsdale, Joe Gomez, Lewis Dunk, and Adam Wharton, were also omitted as he seeks to apply his vision to the team.

During a press statement, Carsley expressed pride in his new role and emphasized the importance of infusing fresh faces into the squad while recognizing the successes of previous management. He also expressed confidence in the potential contributions of Gibbs-White and Gomes, citing their past successes with the Under-21 squad.

Carsley highlighted Gibbs-White’s energetic playing style, noting his creativity and work rate, while describing Gomes as a technically skilled player with a strong attitude. The new interim manager is enthusiastic about the future direction of the team and the youthful vigor the new squad could bring.
