Lightning's International Pro Scouting Pays Off With Impactful Rookies

The Lightning‘s international pro scouting department has proven its worth with the recent success of Finnish forward Waltteri Merela and Norwegian defenseman Emil Lilleberg. Initially signed as depth players for AHL Syracuse, both rookies have stepped up and become regular contributors for the injury-riddled Tampa Bay Lightning.

With a roster hampered by injuries, the Lightning have had to rely on eight rookies making their NHL debuts this season, including Merela and Lilleberg. The team’s top players remain sidelined, and the new acquisitions have played a crucial role in keeping the team competitive.

In recent years, Lightning General Manager Julien BriseBois has excelled at finding replacements with similar skill-sets to fill the void left by injured players. However, finding international professionals who can adjust to the difference in game style between Europe and North America is a challenge. Yet, Merela and Lilleberg have quickly adapted and showcased their talents.

Merela, a two-time champion in Finland‘s top professional league, caught the attention of the Lightning’s Finland scout, Kari Kettunen, due to his impressive two-way game and strong forechecking abilities. The Lightning saw him as a valuable addition to their bottom-six forward group, and Merela has proven them right.

As for Lilleberg, he is only the ninth player from Norway to play in the NHL and has had limited experience at the professional level. However, his strong performances in Sweden‘s top pro league and international tournaments earned him a spot with the Lightning. Lilleberg’s physicality and defensive skills have made him a reliable presence on the blue line.

While both rookies have had their ups and downs, they have become integral parts of the Lightning’s lineup. Merela, in particular, has made an immediate impact with seven points in his first five games back from the AHL, including his first NHL goal. Lilleberg, on the other hand, has impressed with his defensive play and has formed a rookie pairing with Max Crozier.

The Lightning’s international pro scouting department and coaching staffs have played a crucial role in the development of Merela and Lilleberg, pushing them to improve their game daily. The rookies credit the organization’s support and attention to detail for their success.
