Local Coach Reflects on Son’s Success in Major League Baseball
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Local baseball coach John Edman is experiencing a proud moment as his son, Tommy Edman, takes to the field as a utility player for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series. John Edman, who has served as the head baseball coach at La Jolla Country Day School for 26 years, expressed deep pride in his son’s achievements in Major League Baseball.
Reflecting on his son’s journey, John Edman stated, “It’s just a huge blessing; there’s no other way to put it other than that.” Tommy Edman’s baseball career has notable roots at La Jolla Country Day School, where he excelled between 2010 and 2013. According to his father, Tommy has always been dedicated to teamwork, saying, “People have asked him fairly frequently, like, what position do you prefer? And his answer is always, ‘I’ll play wherever I’m asked to play if it’s going to help the team win.'”
The journey to MLB was laden with achievements, from Little League and club baseball to La Jolla Country Day School, and later Stanford University. “He was just always a very smart player who was entirely team-centered,” John commented. “He was humble, had some talent, and just did a lot of things well on the ball field.”
The entire Edman family has fostered a long-standing connection with baseball, and Tommy’s achievements represent both a personal and community triumph. “We’re very proud, obviously; that’s kind of all you can hope for for your family is that they are, in one way or another, a light to other people in their lives,” John stated, adding that Tommy serves as an inspiring figure who demonstrates commitment through his work ethic and humility.
Tommy Edman’s legacy at La Jolla Country Day is cemented with his induction into the school’s Hall of Fame, inspiring future generations of students, a point of pride for the educational institution which caters to students as young as three. “Even the little kids know about him, and they’ll be out here at P.E., see me and look over and yell his name — and it’s kind of neat,” John shared. “He’s just a good example for all of them with the work that he puts in. And I mean, he’s just a good person, to be honest.”
The Los Angeles Dodgers players, including Tommy Edman, are set to face the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday at 5:38 p.m., as the Edman family looks on with pride.
